1. Ustrasana stretches the entire front of the body, the ankles, thighs, groins, abdomen, chest, and throat. It targets and stretches the deep hip flexors (psoas) and strengthens back muscles.

2. It greatly improves posture and stimulates the organs of the abdomen and neck.

3. In the beginning, a chair behind you is a good way to learn to lift and lengthen the front of the body without trying to move back. Also in the beginning keep the head level and don’t bring it back.

Supta Virasana (Reclining Hero Pose)

1. This pose stretches the abdomen, thighs, deep hip flexors (psoas), knees and ankles. It strengthens the arches of the feet and relieves tired legs. It is also great for the relief of menstrual tension.

2. This is an intense pose and if you have any knee or back issues you should avoid doing this full pose. What is possible to do is the pose but with bolsters or blankets therefore not taking the pose down to the flat of the floor, which will still give benefit of the pose but without any risk of harm to the body.

3. Badha Konasana, Gomukasana (Leg Variation) and Virasana are good poses to build into the pose and is a great pose to prepare for standing and particularly back-bending poses.
